iSchool doctoral student, Christopher Mascaro, was recently awarded Best Student Paper in Information Technology and Politics from the American Political Science Association. Mascaros paper, titled The Daily Brew: The Structural Evolution of the Coffee Party on Facebook during the 2010 United States Midterm Election Season, was co-authored by Allison Novak (doctoral student of Culture and Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences) and iSchool Assistant Professor Sean Goggins (Mascaros advisor).
The paper analyzes the activity of a Facebook group (centered on the Coffee Party political movement) in the 7-month period leading up to and following the 2010 U.S. midterm elections. Mascaro is continuing his pursuit of research at the intersection of information science and political science in his dissertation, which is an examination of the use of Twitter in this year's national elections.
